Zoo Salzburg: Wildlife and Nature at the Foot of the Hellbrunner Berg

At the foot of the Hellbrunner Berg, with views of the Berchtesgaden Alps, lies Zoo Salzburg. Around 1,600 animals from about 150 species live here in spacious, naturalistic habitats. A walk through the zoo leads through the continents of Eurasia, Africa, South America and Australia, combining wildlife viewing with an unusually beautiful backdrop.

From Hunting Ground to Modern Wildlife Park

The site's history reaches far back. As early as the 15th century, an archbishop's hunting park stood here, and with the construction of Hellbrunn Palace from 1612 onward, the grounds developed into an important landscape. The current zoo opened in 1961 and has been continuously expanded ever since. What was once historic ground has become a modern wildlife park, actively involved in European and international species conservation programs.

Closeness and Retreat, Side by Side

White-handed gibbons, jaguars, rhinos and numerous bird species number among the zoo's well-known residents. The Humboldt penguins are especially popular, their graceful dives among the most enjoyable moments of any visit. The spacious enclosures give the animals room to retreat, while allowing visitors to observe them calmly and at a comfortable distance.

A Destination for Families

In the petting zoo, children can meet pygmy goats, and alpacas can be fed with special food. Playgrounds, picnic areas and the zoo restaurant round out the offering and easily turn a visit into a full afternoon.

Zoo Salzburg is open all year round and, thanks to its location on the edge of the city, is easily reached by public transport or by car, an outing that combines well with time spent in the city of Salzburg.
