Vienna State Opera: A Temple of Music and Culture

On the Ringstrasse, in the heart of Vienna, stands the Vienna State Opera, one of the world's most significant opera houses. Opened in 1869 with a performance of Mozart's "Don Giovanni", the neo-Romanesque building had to be ceremonially reopened in 1955 with Beethoven's "Fidelio" following severe wartime damage.

A Different Piece Every Day

What sets the Vienna State Opera apart is its repertoire system: unlike many other houses, it presents a different work almost every evening from a broad repertoire of opera and ballet. This variety makes it one of the busiest opera houses in the world.

The State Opera gains worldwide attention every year through the Vienna Opera Ball, when the auditorium is transformed into a magnificent ballroom. The house sits centrally opposite the Hotel Sacher and is reachable via nearly every subway line through Karlsplatz station.
