Vienna City Hall: Neo-Gothic Landmark on the Ringstrasse

With its pointed towers and richly articulated facade, Vienna's City Hall ranks among the most striking buildings on the Ringstrasse. Since 1883, it has been the seat of Vienna's mayor and city council, and at the same time a stage for some of the city's largest events.

Neo-Gothic Modeled on Flemish Town Halls

Friedrich von Schmidt designed the City Hall after the model of medieval Flemish town halls, with a 98-meter main tower crowned by the Rathausmann statue. The symmetry of the facade, the delicate tracery windows, and the sweeping arcaded courtyard make it one of the most elaborate buildings of the Ringstrasse era.

Seat of the City Government

Inside, Vienna's city council convenes, the mayor has his office, and lavish halls such as the Festsaal are used for receptions and ceremonies. Guided tours offer glimpses into the historic representative rooms that otherwise remain closed to the public.

Stage for the Film Festival and Christmas Market

The wide square in front, Rathausplatz, transforms into different stages depending on the season, in summer for the film festival with open-air cinema and food stalls, in winter for one of Vienna's best-known Christmas markets. This versatility makes City Hall one of the liveliest squares in the city, all year round.
