Volkstheater Vienna: A Stage for Tradition and the Present

Volkstheater Vienna opened in 1889 as a civic counterpart to the imperial Burgtheater, intended to bring dramatic art within reach of a broader public. Architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer created a building whose grand facade and distinctive dome still impress today.

From Raimund to the Present

In its early years, the programme centred on works by Ferdinand Raimund, Johann Nestroy and Franz Grillparzer. Over time, the theatre steadily expanded its repertoire to include international and contemporary writers, and continues to reflect shifts in literature and society today.

A Stage for Social Questions

Alongside classic productions, Volkstheater has long positioned itself as a venue for social discussion, regularly staging contemporary works. Located on the edge of the MuseumsQuartier, it is easily reached via the U2 or U3 subway lines.
