Stift Zwettl: A Spiritual Centre in the Heart of the Waldviertel

In the heart of the Waldviertel lies Stift Zwettl, one of Austria's most significant Cistercian monasteries. Founded in 1138 by Hadmar I of Kuenring, the abbey remains home to monks today and has shaped the region's spiritual and economic life for almost 900 years.

Gothic Cloister, Baroque Church

Architecturally, the abbey brings together several eras: its gothic cloister, with delicate tracery windows, ranks among the finest of its kind in Austria, while the abbey church, with its towering spire, received a baroque makeover in the 18th century. The impressive library and richly decorated chapter hall round out the tour.

Monastic Life and Products

Alongside tours through its historic rooms, the abbey offers a glimpse into living monastic life and sells its own products, such as wine and honey produced on site. Stift Zwettl lies a few kilometres outside the town of Zwettl and is easily reached by car.
