Sisi Museum: A Window Into the Life of an Empress

In the historic rooms of the Vienna Hofburg, the Sisi Museum is dedicated to the life of Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi, beyond the romanticised image shaped by films and popular culture. Personal belongings, dresses and documents paint a layered portrait of the empress.

Between Duty and a Drive for Freedom

The exhibition traces Elisabeth's life from a carefree youth in Bavaria through the strict ceremonies of the Viennese court to her violent death in 1898. Particularly striking are recreations of her famous exercise rooms and her elaborate beauty and fitness regimen, fitting her reputation as an independent, unconventional empress.

A Tour Through Three Collections

The Sisi Museum is closely linked to the Imperial Apartments and the Silberkammer, together forming a comprehensive tour of imperial living and ceremonial culture. The entrance is located at the Michaelerkuppel of the Hofburg, in the centre of the first district.
