Schmetterlinghaus: A Tropical Oasis in the Heart of Vienna

In the Burggarten, right next to the Hofburg, the Schmetterlinghaus opens up a tropical world in the middle of Vienna. Housed in the former Art Nouveau palm house, built around 1900 as part of the imperial gardens, it is now home to hundreds of free flying butterflies from around the world.

A Climate Like the Rainforest

In tropical warmth and high humidity, visitors move among lush vegetation, small waterfalls and exotic plants while colourful butterflies flutter close by. A viewing enclosure also shows the pupation of butterflies, a fascinating glimpse into their transformation.

Historic Glass, Modern Experience

The delicate glass structure of the palm house itself ranks among Vienna's finest Art Nouveau buildings, and is a particularly striking sight at dusk when lit from within. The Schmetterlinghaus sits in the heart of the first district, just steps from the Vienna State Opera.
