Schönbrunn Palace: An Imperial Summer Residence of World Renown

Far more than a palace, Schönbrunn Palace stands for imperial elegance and Habsburg history and ranks among Austria's most visited sights. Originally built as a hunting lodge, it was expanded into the imperial summer residence under Maria Theresa. Of the palace's 1,441 rooms, around 40 are open to guided tours, from the Golden Audience Room to Franz Joseph's bedroom.

UNESCO World Heritage Since 1996

The palace's overall Baroque design has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1996. Visitors wanting the fuller experience can book the Grand Tour, which includes the apartments of Sisi and Emperor Franz Joseph.

Palace Gardens and the Gloriette

The freely accessible palace gardens, with their geometric avenues, mazes, fountains and sculptures, invite long walks. The climb up to the Gloriette, a triumphal arch with a café, rewards visitors with the best view over Vienna, especially atmospheric and quiet early in the morning.

The Zoo and Cultural Programme

Founded in 1752, Tiergarten Schönbrunn is considered the world's oldest zoo and today houses more than 700 animal species, including a panda house and an aquarium pavilion. The palace itself regularly hosts concerts and evening tours, with the classical concert of works by Mozart and Strauss in the Orangery Hall a particular favourite.
