Schloss Weitra: A Journey Into the Middle Ages

In the northwestern Waldviertel, near the border with the Czech Republic, stands Schloss Weitra, whose origins trace back to a medieval castle of the Kuenringer family. Renovated repeatedly over the centuries, it took on its distinctive Renaissance facade with stepped gables mainly in the 16th century.

One of Austria's Oldest Breweries

Beer has been brewed in Weitra since as early as 1321, making the castle brewery one of Austria's oldest brewing sites. Tours through the castle combine the noble family's history with a look at traditional brewing craft, still practised today in the historic brewhouse.

Concerts and Festivals in the Courtyard

The castle's courtyard regularly serves as a stage for concerts and events, breathing extra life into the historic setting. Schloss Weitra sits in the centre of the small town of Weitra, about a 20 minute drive from Gmünd.
