From Water Castle to Baroque Palace

Out of a medieval moated castle, the House of Esterházy developed the palace into a lavish baroque residence during the 17th century, and its present form largely dates back to that building phase. The Esterházy family ranked among the most powerful and wealthiest noble houses in Central Europe.

The Haydnsaal

World-famous is the Haydnsaal inside the palace, named after Joseph Haydn, who worked and composed here for decades as the Esterházys' court music director. Acoustically, the hall is considered one of the finest concert halls in the world and remains in use for concerts today.
