Peterskirche: A Baroque Jewel in the Heart of Vienna

Just steps from the Graben, tucked among the buildings of the first district, sits the Peterskirche on Petersplatz. The current building was constructed between 1701 and 1733 to designs by Gabriele Montani and Lukas von Hildebrandt, on a site that, according to legend, was already home to one of Vienna's oldest church foundations.

A Dome Inspired by St. Peter's

The striking green dome, deliberately modelled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, defines the church's appearance from a distance. Inside, visitors are met with magnificent frescoes, gilded altars and a particularly striking relief depicting the martyrdom of Saint John Nepomuk.

A Quiet Spot Amid the Bustle

Despite sitting in the heart of touristic Vienna, the Peterskirche remains a quiet retreat, and regularly hosts concerts as well. Admission is free, and the church is a short walk from the Graben or the Stephansplatz subway station.
