The Austrian Parliament: A Symbol of Democracy

On the Ringstrasse, between the City Hall and the Burgtheater, stands the Parliament, seat of Austria's National and Federal Councils. Theophil Hansen deliberately designed the building in the style of Greek antiquity, an architectural nod to the democratic ideals of ancient Greece, and completed it in 1883.

Columns, Statues, Symbolism

The monumental colonnaded facade with its portico, and the Pallas Athene Fountain standing in front, still define the Parliament's appearance today. Inside, intricate mosaics and ceiling frescoes impress visitors, linking Greek mythology to the history of the Austrian state.

A House Open to the Public

Following extensive renovation, the Parliament now welcomes visitors through guided tours and a visitor centre, offering a look at how Austrian democracy works. The building is easily reached via the U2 or U3 subway lines to Volkstheater station.
