Otto Wagner Houses: Art Nouveau Masterpieces on the Wienzeile

On the Linke Wienzeile, not far from the Naschmarkt, Otto Wagner built three apartment houses in 1898/99 that rank among the high points of Viennese Art Nouveau. Two of them, standing directly side by side, still catch the eye of passersby today.

The Majolica House

The so called Majolica House at Wienzeile 40 is covered from top to bottom in floral majolica tiles designed by Alois Ludwig. Curving vines and blossoms spread across the entire facade in vivid colours, giving the building its unmistakable character.

Gold by Koloman Moser

The neighbouring house at Wienzeile 38 takes a different approach: gilded ornaments by Koloman Moser and rooftop figures by sculptor Othmar Schimkowitz decorate its pale facade. Together, the two buildings form one of the most striking ensembles of Viennese Secession architecture, an easy walk from the Naschmarkt.
