Hochmoor Schrems Nature Park: Bog Landscape in the Waldviertel

East of Schrems in the northern Waldviertel lies a landscape that has become rare in Austria, an intact raised bog. Hochmoor Schrems Nature Park protects this fragile ecosystem and makes it accessible via boardwalks and a modern visitor center.

A Bog of International Significance

The bog near Schrems ranks among the most important wetland areas in Central Europe and holds international recognition as a Ramsar site, a status granted only to particularly valuable wetlands. Moss species, carnivorous plants such as sundew, and rare dragonflies find here one of the last intact habitats of their kind in Lower Austria.

The UnterWasserReich Visitor Center

Located directly on the water, the UnterWasserReich visitor center conveys the formation and significance of the bog through exhibitions and an underwater observation area. Guided tours and the nature trail, which leads deep into the bog itself, both start from here.

The Bog Nature Trail

Wooden boardwalks carry the nature trail across the swaying bog, past information panels on peat extraction, bog formation, and the highly specialized plant life. The loop trail is also suitable for families and strollers, making the nature park one of the most accessible bog experiences in Austria.
