The Murinsel in Graz: A Modern Landmark

In the middle of the Mur River, which splits Graz into an eastern and western half, floats the Murinsel, a sculptural structure by New York artist Vito Acconci. Built for the 2003 European Capital of Culture celebrations, the shell shaped platform connects both riverbanks via two sweeping footbridges.

Architecture as Art

The steel and glass structure resembles an open shell or a stranded ship and ranks among the city's most photographed sights. At night, elaborate lighting bathes the island in shifting colours, making it a striking landmark along the river.

A Place to Linger

On the island itself, a café and a small play area for children invite visitors to linger, while the view of the old town and Schlossberg rounds out the visit. The Murinsel sits centrally and is a short walk from downtown Graz.
