Mountain Escape: The Interactive Outdoor Trail on Gemeindealpe Mitterbach

Since July 2025, Gemeindealpe Mitterbach has expanded its summer offering with an attraction of its own, the Mountain Escape Trail. The concept pairs strategic thinking with a nature experience, inviting visitors to explore the mountain landscape playfully while gaining a closer look at the region, its history and its natural surroundings.

Scavenger Hunt Meets Escape Room

The Mountain Escape Trail combines a classic scavenger hunt with elements of an outdoor escape room. Participants follow a storyline that leads from the mid station to the summit, with puzzles and hidden clues along the way that must be solved to uncover the secret of the Gemeindealpe. Three trails of increasing difficulty are planned through 2027, with the first course making use of the existing infrastructure around the lift system.

How the Game Works

All that's needed is a smartphone. At the valley station, players also receive a backpack stocked with helpful materials. The first stage takes the chairlift up to the mid station, from where the roughly three kilometre trail to the summit begins, with digital and physical clues along the route. Mountain carts and a crawler course round out the offering for guests of every age.

Getting There by Rail

Gemeindealpe Mitterbach places real emphasis on eco-friendly access: thanks to the Mariazellerbahn railway, the valley station sits just a short walk from Mitterbach/Erlaufsee station.
