Landtagsschiff: The Modern Heart of the Landhaus Quarter

In the Landhaus quarter of St. Pölten, Lower Austria's government district, the Landtagsschiff forms the striking centrepiece. Designed by architect Ernst Hoffmann and built between 1992 and 1997, it serves as the seat of the Lower Austrian state parliament and provincial government.

A Building Shaped Like a Ship

The name fits: the building is indeed shaped like a ship, appearing to float above a reflecting pool. This form symbolises a provincial government meant to stay on course, while also creating a deliberate architectural contrast to St. Pölten's baroque old town.

A Visitor Centre Nearby

Right next to the Landtagsschiff stands the 80 metre Klangturm, with walk in sound chambers and an observation platform overlooking the city. Since 2022, the Forum Landtag has complemented the ensemble as a modern, interactive visitor centre that brings the parliament's work closer to visitors. Guided tours of the Landhaus run Monday to Saturday by appointment.
