Jewish Museum Vienna: Jewish Life, Past and Present, in the Heart of the City

Just a few steps from St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Jewish Museum Vienna tells a story closely tied to the development of the city itself. Between historic objects and personal stories, a layered picture of Jewish life in Vienna emerges, from its beginnings in the Middle Ages through to the present day.

Two Locations, Two Perspectives

The museum spans two buildings in the historic centre. The Palais Eskeles on Dorotheergasse traces the history of Jewish life across the centuries through its permanent exhibition "Our City! Jewish Vienna to the Present". The Museum Judenplatz turns to an even earlier chapter with "Our Middle Ages! The First Jewish Community in Vienna", complemented by the excavated remains of a 13th-century medieval synagogue.

Rotating exhibitions and contemporary installations show how Jewish culture, religious tradition and social change continue to shape Vienna today.

A Walk Through the Old Town

Both locations sit right in the historic centre and pair naturally with a walk through Vienna's old town. Each site opens up its own perspective on the city's past and present.
