Hundertwasserhaus: A Masterwork of the Uneven Line

Few buildings carry the signature of a single artist quite like the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna's third district. Built between 1983 and 1985 together with architect Josef Krawina, it embodies Friedensreich Hundertwasser's vision of an architecture guided by nature rather than the straight line.

No Two Windows Alike

The apartment building's facade is dressed in bold colours, mosaics and irregular shapes, no window matches another. This deliberate break from standardisation was, for Hundertwasser, an expression of each resident's individuality and a statement against the uniform architecture of his time.

Over 200 Tree Tenants

What stands out most is the building's greenery. More than 200 trees and shrubs grow on its balconies and roof terraces, affectionately called "tree tenants" by Hundertwasser. Across the street, Hundertwasser Village invites visitors to linger in shops and cafés designed in the same unmistakable style, just a short walk from the Wien Mitte-Landstraße subway station.
