Haus des Meeres Vienna: An Ocean in the Middle of the City

While Mariahilfer Strasse buzzes with summer life outside, sharks glide silently through the water inside Haus des Meeres. Inside a former flak tower from the Second World War, a surprising world of tropical landscapes, coral reefs and exotic wildlife opens up right in the middle of Vienna.

Just a few steps past the entrance, the atmosphere changes. Shimmering water, warm light and the slow drift of large fish quickly leave the pace of the city behind.

Tropical House and 360-Degree Shark Tank

The large tropical house is especially striking. Between palm trees, streams and dense greenery, the atmosphere feels closer to the Amazon than to central Vienna. Free-roaming small monkeys, exotic plants and lush foliage turn the visit into an immersive nature experience.

A highlight is the 360-degree shark tank, where sharks trace calm, steady circles while visitors walk around the tank from every angle. In total, the tower is home to around 10,000 animals from more than 600 species, including tropical fish as well as reptiles, birds and rare marine creatures.

A Special Place for Warm Summer Days

The visit is especially rewarding between spring and late summer. While heat lingers over the streets outside, the building offers a richly varied world to explore.

The route climbs steadily upward through several levels. At the very top waits the rooftop terrace, with a surprising panoramic view: with St. Stephen's Cathedral, the MuseumsQuartier and the Vienna Woods all visible at once, it becomes clear just how close nature and city life sit together in Vienna.
