Haas Haus: A Postmodern Counterpart to St. Stephen's Cathedral

Directly across from St. Stephen's Cathedral, on Stephansplatz, stands the Haas Haus, one of Vienna's most debated buildings. Completed in 1990 to designs by Austrian architect Hans Hollein, the new building replaced a 1950s department store and sparked heated debate across the city with its postmodern design language.

Glass in Dialogue With Gothic

The curved, glazed facade of the Haas Haus reflects St. Stephen's Cathedral, creating a visual dialogue between historic gothic architecture and contemporary design. Rather than blending in, the building deliberately sets a counterpoint, and has since become a fixture of the cityscape in its own right.
