DomQuartier Salzburg: A Baroque Ensemble in the Heart of the Old Town

DomQuartier is not a conventional museum but an architectural experience linking the Baroque centre of Salzburg together: the state rooms of the Residenz, the cathedral arches, the North Oratory, the Cathedral Museum and the terraces overlooking the city's historic squares. Walking the route reveals Salzburg from a vantage point that was long inaccessible.

Baroque Splendour and Political Power

The state rooms of the Residenz show how closely art and power were intertwined in Baroque Salzburg, with ceiling paintings, stucco work and collections of European painting that make the influence of the prince-archbishops tangible. The route continues across the cathedral arches, a passage that once served, quite deliberately, to connect secular and religious authority.

The Cathedral From a Rare Vantage Point

A highlight of the walk is the view down into Salzburg's Baroque cathedral from above. The open gallery conveys a sense of the space's height and acoustics, a view possible only as part of the DomQuartier route. The Cathedral Museum rounds out the visit with sculptures, paintings and goldsmith work spanning more than 1,000 years, tracing the cultural exchange between Salzburg, Italy, southern Germany and Bohemia.

The route ends on a Baroque terrace overlooking the cathedral square and the old town, a transition between interior and cityscape that is especially striking in the morning, when the light falls softly across the facades.
