Burgtheater: Vienna's Historic Theatre Jewel

On Vienna's Ringstrasse, facing the City Hall, stands the Burgtheater, one of the most significant German language stages in existence. The current building opened in 1888, replacing the original Hofburgtheater on Michaelerplatz while carrying forward a theatrical tradition stretching back more than two hundred years.

Architecture in the Sign of the Muses

Designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer, the building impresses with a lavish facade and a grand staircase whose ceiling frescoes were partly painted by Gustav Klimt. Known simply as "die Burg", the house has shaped Vienna's reputation as a city of theatre for generations.

An Ensemble of International Standing

The Burgtheater's ensemble ranks among the most respected in the German speaking world, with a programme spanning classics to contemporary premieres. Located right on the Ringstrasse, it is easily reached by tram or on foot from Rathausplatz.
