Burg Hohenwerfen: A Journey Into the Past

High above the Salzach valley, on a striking rocky outcrop, sits Burg Hohenwerfen, one of Austria's most impressive fortresses. Built as a border stronghold under the Archbishops of Salzburg as early as 1077, it served over the centuries as a defensive structure, prison and hunting lodge.

Between Defence and Falconry

The tour through the castle passes historic living quarters, a torture chamber and its formidable defensive works, offering a vivid picture of medieval castle life. A particular draw is the falconry, whose flying displays with free flying eagles and falcons against the fortress backdrop rank among the highlights of any visit.

A View of the Tennengebirge

From the keep, the view stretches far across the Salzach valley to the imposing Tennengebirge mountains. Burg Hohenwerfen lies roughly 40 kilometres south of Salzburg and is easily reached by car or train to Werfen.
