Achensee: Tyrol's Largest Lake Between the Karwendel and Rofan Ranges

Framed between the jagged peaks of the Karwendel and the gentler shapes of the Rofan range lies Achensee, Tyrol's largest lake at roughly nine kilometers in length. Its turquoise water and the steep slopes surrounding it make it one of the most striking lakes in the Alps.

Sitting at 929 meters above sea level, Achensee is considered one of Austria's cleanest and coldest larger lakes, fed by numerous streams from the surrounding mountains. The combination of altitude, water temperature, and wind has made it a center of sailing and windsurfing in Tyrol.

Between the Karwendel and Rofan Ranges

To the west rise the jagged limestone peaks of the Karwendel, to the east the somewhat gentler forms of the Rofan range, a contrast in landscape that makes the lake especially striking from many viewpoints. Hiking trails along both shores open up the lake basin to strollers and ambitious mountaineers alike.

From the Achensee Railway to Water Sports

Since 1889, the historic Achensee railway, one of Europe's oldest cog railways, has connected Jenbach with the lakeshore and is itself an attraction of the region. At the lake, the offerings range from boat trips to sailing and diving, and cycling paths that circle the entire Achensee.
