Schweizerhaus in the Prater: Vienna's Legendary Beer Garden

In the middle of the Wurstelprater sits the Schweizerhaus, family run since 1920 and one of the best known addresses in Viennese tavern culture. Its sprawling beer garden, shaded by old chestnut trees, seats thousands of guests and ranks among the city's largest and most popular.

The Schweizerhaus is famous above all for its crispy pork knuckle, served here for decades according to a traditional recipe, as well as for its freshly tapped Budweiser Budvar, available in only a few places across Austria. Especially on warm summer evenings, the beer garden fills with locals and visitors enjoying the relaxed atmosphere between the Giant Wheel and the trees of the Prater. The Schweizerhaus is open from April to October and sits just a short walk from Praterstern subway station.
